From electro rap to classical piano music, from Montreal to Paris via Berlin, fiction and reality merge into a journey into the world of Chilly Gonzales, bursting with humour and megalomania.
The performer and self-proclaimed Canadian “musical genius” Jason Charles Beck, a.k.a. Chilly Gonzales, invites us to explore his personal universe and to decide who we really are. Artistic mutation is the only constant in an overwhelming hodgepodge of interviews, performances and home videos in which the frontier between the stage persona and the real person is barely discernible. From piano lessons with his grandfather to belting it out with the Vienna Symphony, his histrionic crusade with Peaches to captain the Berlin art punk scene with runaway rap and sexuality, his reinvention as solo lyrical pianist, his jazz-pop adventure at the hand of another old buddy, Feist, and his collaborations with Jarvis Cocker, Daft Punk and Drake. A sardonic portrait of an impulsive and passionate artist for whom megalomania and insecurity are two sides of the same coin.
